Project Description

The new S2 studio is located in the up in coming trendy 124 Street area (Westmount), just north of downtown Edmonton.  The location is still considered central but advantageous in that it is not burdened by the heavy traffic congestion of Jasper Avenue. The studio’s concept is derived from the minimalist, “less is more” philosophy of Mies Van Der Rohe, an influential modernist architect of the 20th century. The studio design is an adaptation of his structural expressionism method.  His idea of simplicity, free-flowing open space guided the design. The main concept was to create an interior space free from obstruction keeping with the theme of free flowing open design. Inspiration was drawn using materials favoured by Meis. White walls, wood and stone elements drive the composition and were used throughout the space along with strong vertical elements and horizontal planes. The use of the renowned Barcelona Chair in the main reception area combines form, function and beauty and accentuates Mies’ ability to create elegance and grace in an otherwise uninspiring object. The studio’s colour scheme inspiration came from pioneer architect, Eileen Grey. Grey was one of the first female architects turned designer to be of any influence in the Modern Movement. Heavily involved in the art world, Grey was one of the few designers to masterfully infuse colour into her architectural and furniture designs. The Barcelona Chairs are the most prominent feature of the studio, combining Mies’ minimalist values with Eileen Grey’s colourful, creative approach to design.
