Elevating Excellence in Calgary's Hockey Community
The Calgary Max Bell Centre is a major City of Calgary recreation facility, featuring twin ice surfaces, seating for over 2,400 spectators, and a wide range of amenities including fitness services, physiotherapy, and event hosting. Home to the Junior A Canucks, the centre also hosts major annual events such as Chasing Summer and the Mac’s AAA Tournament.
S2 was engaged in 2019 to deliver conceptual design and cost planning for a comprehensive facility upgrade, completed in spring 2022. The project modernized both building systems and user spaces, including:
- Full replacement of ice plant systems and arena refrigeration
- New rink slab for Arena 1
- Redesigned main lobby and spectator areas to enhance the guest experience
- Upgraded and fully accessible change rooms, washrooms, and seating
- New running track, fitness area, and family-friendly amenity space
- Improved press box access, scoreboards, and arena netting
- Lighting, HVAC, and building system upgrades throughout
- Renovated concessions, kitchen, meeting rooms, and staff spaces
- Site improvements including landscaping and parking enhancements
Working closely with the City and consultant team, S2 delivered a comprehensive design and construction package within budget, enabling efficient implementation during the planned 2021 facility shutdown.
