Located a stones throw away from the banks of the Bow River on the cusp of Calgary’s revitalized East Village District, the proposed Riverfront West development promises to provide an innovative and unique pedestrian focused aesthetic as a gateway into the city’s downtown.
The proposed 4,933 sq m (53,102 sq ft) development will include a street level podium with office and retail, four-storey below grade parking, a roof top amenity social space, main level two-storey residential units and two residential towers (21 and 24 storeys). Immediately north of the site are the public city bike paths and eastwardly, a number of newer developments in the East Village District.
Landscaping plays an important role in the design by creating a soft transition between the pedestrian spaces and the adjoining retail spaces. Trees have been introduced to not only establish scale and walkability, but also to provide a buffer between the pedestrians and the cars. The character and feel of any street is typically defined by the vehicles so the landscaping was designed to help soften the connection between pedestrian and vehicles adding a more human scale.
