Today, we learn about Colin Hume, who works out of our Calgary studio.
What is your role with S2, how long have you been with the firm, and what is your favourite part of your job?
I am an architectural technologist. I was with S2 for a couple of years but left to take care of my family and be a stay-at-home dad for a while. Now that my three kids are a little older, I’m very happy to be back and am looking forward to the future! My favourite part of the job is being part of an awesome team and working to resolve the technical issues that always come up when working on a project.
What do you like most about design and architecture?
I love being a part of something that affects people’s lives so much. Contributing to the creation of where people live and work and helping define spaces that people call home is very exciting.
How did you get into the field?
I spent about eight years managing restaurants – that’s how I moved to Calgary from Vancouver (and met my wife). The next seven or eight years I spent as a Red Seal Carpenter building homes and learning all about wood and fine joinery. I went back to school for architectural technologies in 2011 and haven’t looked back since. I love that I can draw my customer service experience from restaurants and construction knowledge from carpentry and apply these to what I do every day! I’ve worked at a few different firms and can confidently say that this is the place for me.
What work are you most proud of thus far in your career?
The Randy O’Dell House in Calgary has been my favourite project so far. Not only is it wood framed, but it also achieves the WELL Standard which was a bit of a learning curve for me.
What or who inspires your work?
My future self. The person I want to be in 20 years.
What is your favourite restaurant in Calgary?
Alloy on 42nd Ave. SW.
What do you do in your spare time?
What spare time? I have a busy family and three kids!! Haha! I also design and build custom wood furniture and other small woodworks like jewelry boxes, cutting boards, etc.
What do you like best about working at S2?
I most enjoy being part of the team. I love the atmosphere and the people here. That’s why I came back.
