Today, we learn about Umid Abdullaev, an Intern Interior Designer working out of our Calgary studio.

What is your role with S2; how long have you been with the firm and what is your favourite part of your job?
I’m an intermediate-level Intern Interior Designer at S2. I joined S2’s Edmonton studio in April 2019 and the favourite part of my job is seeing projects I’ve worked on being built. It inspires me and makes me want to do more exciting projects!

What do you like most about design and architecture?

I like that we get to apply knowledge that we learned at school or everyday practice towards solving our clients’ problems. This way we come up with unique solutions that not only envision our clients’ needs but also showcase our unique design approach.

How did you get into Interior Design?
My background in industrial design led me to the field of Interior Design, as the two fields deal with design at a more intimate, human scale. When I was at the crossroads of choosing my future career, having worked a few years alongside inspirational interior designers, I decided to go back to school to get my Master’s Degree in Interior Design at the University of Manitoba. Following that I worked at DIALOG Edmonton for few years before joining the team at S2 in 2019.

What work are you most proud of thus far in your career?

I had a chance to work on several projects relating to culture, education as well as office design. I’m most proud of my contributions to Telus World of Science Edmonton Dome Theatre renovation, Royal Alberta Museum, BOW45, Nanaimo Fire Station #1 and the S2 Edmonton Studio renovation to name a few.

What or who inspires your work?
Most of all, my fellow colleagues give me inspiration and encouragement. I’ve also been a big fan of Tadao Ando, Moriyama and Teshima and the local firm Frank Architecture.

My favourite restaurant in Calgary is…
…Green Chili. I love ordering takeout on Saturday evenings from their location on 17th Ave. Their goat biryanis are heartwarming.

When I’m not working, I’m…
…TINKERING! I’m an enthusiast RC modeler, and my collection has grown to over 20 model cars that happen to be radio-controllable. I don’t drive them very often but I get a kick out of putting them together.

What do you like best about working at S2?
I love the great learning environment at S2. Since I’ve joined S2 I’ve learned so much about the technical aspect of design but also new ways of thinking about the interior spacs. Besides that I miss Friday treats. I hope when the world returns to normal, we will have a big Friday feast!
