Today, we learn about Wildor Bollhorn, a Technologist working out of our Calgary studio.
What is your role with S2; how long have you been with the firm and what is your favourite part of your job?
I am a Senior Technologist with the Tech department. I have been with S2 since March 2017 (coming up to 4 years). I love working with a team to develop solutions to the variety of problems that are encountered on any given project, and the opportunity to learn new approaches, share knowledge and gain understanding from varied backgrounds and experiences.
What do you like most about design and architecture?
Being able to participate in the creation of buildings and spaces that people experience, use and enjoy on a daily basis. Seeing and experiencing how these constructed spaces help to organize and facilitate work and life and the associated learning as to how the design and detailing decisions we make influence the flow and function of the people living in and around the projects.
How did you get into the Architectural Technology field?
I have always enjoyed building and designing all manner of things, and I got into drafting and design in high school alongside my interests in art and sciences. This led me to the Architectural Technology Program at SAIT and on into this wonderful industry.
What work are you most proud of thus far in your career?
Having had the opportunity to work with so many great teams and individuals on a wide variety of projects and to be able to provide support and mentorship to a number of these people and help them achieve success on their projects.
What or who inspires your work?
I am a huge fan of nature and all it has to teach us. I love to take time to observe and try to understand the nuances and diversity that go into how natural systems adapt to conditions and craft solutions to various situations. The elegance and efficiency of nature is a wonderful thing to see and it always seems to just be the tip of the iceberg for opportunities to learn and develop.

When I’m not working, I’m…
…In one of three spaces: 1) My garage undertaking my next project building something that came to my mind in metal, wood, leather, or some other material I have decided to learn how to work with, 2) Out enjoying nature, be it in my yard, in our local parks and wild spaces, or on the water in my sailboat or kayak, 3) At home, by myself or with friends and family enjoying and playing music.
What do you like best about working at S2?
Working with a great, open and proactive team with great individuals from which I can learn as well as share my knowledge and skills to help the team bring projects to successful completion and develop their skills and knowledge.
