S2 has been around for over 26 years. We’ve seen and experienced a lot. Despite our current challenging times, we know that our industry will respond with resilience, creativity and hard work.
Our founding partners Robert Spaetgens and David Symons met in University in the 1970’s, were classmates, roommates and worked together for many years as senior project architects at a major architectural practice. In 1993, Symons Spaetgens Evans (SSE) was created and changed to S2 Architecture in 2003. Their long time professional association and friendship has been a major influence on the strength, stability, and sustainability of S2.
Both Bob and Dave continue to be active members in the Partnership. Since 1993 we’ve grown to 7 Partners, 3 Associate Principals, and 10 associates, many of whom have been with us for more than 15 years. In 2017, after collaborating and working with Robert Lange of Vancouver-based Assembly Architecture, S2 merged with Assembly and Rob became managing partner at S2 in Vancouver.
Our work in British Columbia continues to expand; currently we have a number of projects in progress:
- Nanaimo, Fire Station No. 1 Replacement
- Richmond, multiple upgrades to City Hall
- North Vancouver, Maplewood Fire Headquarters; three
projects for B.C. Housing; and various other projects - Burnaby, West Vancouver, and Whistler; various projects
Our Vancouver studio recently completed the renovation and move to a new office space in Gastown to support our growing staff. Our talented team in Vancouver is eager and excited to continue to build on our firm’s history and are committed to continuously raise the bar on design excellence.
