Today, we learn about Marco Cheung, who works out of our Vancouver studio.

What is your role with S2, how long have you been with the firm, and what is your favourite part of your job?
Hello, I’m Marco Cheung and it’s a pleasure to be part of the S2 team!
I am an Architectural Technologist in the Vancouver office and started in August 2021. I’m currently working with the Edmonton and Calgary teams on multi-family residential projects and a fabrication warehouse. I’m looking forward to supporting all the S2 teams and working on a variety of private and public projects.

What do you like most about design and architecture?
Spaces, and the stories told in those spaces! Our final products create spaces for people to connect and express themselves, but even on the journey we can find spaces to communicate with our clients, contractors, consultants, and the city. By working together, we can build communities beyond our immediate reach. And by creating spaces for communities, we can help others live, play, and work.

How did you get into the field?
I have a diploma in Architecture and Building Technology from BCIT and am currently furthering my studies part-time through the RAIC Syllabus program. AJ Vaid (who used to be with S2) was my previous mentor and spoke highly of S2’s culture and work ethic, so when I saw an opening, I was excited to apply! Prior to S2 I worked freelance home design, at a start-up architecture firm, and at a large international architecture firm.

What work are you most proud of thus far in your career?

I’m quite proud I’ve been able to work on residential projects at all scales: from a small home renovation to multi-tower mixed-use projects! I’ve been blessed with opportunities to coordinate and connect with people at all stages of design and construction early in my career, a curiosity I hope to bring to S2.

What or who inspires your work?
I’m inspired by creative uses of space! A public square being used by performers, a meaningful set design in a movie, a narrative use of corridors in a video game…

What is your favourite restaurant in Vancouver?
CRAFT Beer Market! Dozens of beers on tap ensure I’m always finding something new.

What do you do in your spare time?
As a developing storyteller, I’m always trying to find new moments and methods to express myself. I enjoy reading, writing, gaming, and playing tabletop roleplaying games! I’ve also started learning virtual reality development and rendering as a toolset to telling better stories for my studies, and for my own exploration.

What do you like best about working at S2?
The team has been friendly and hardworking, making an impression on me all the way in Vancouver! It’s exciting to be working with capable colleagues. I’m looking forward to how we can help cool people make cool things.
