The Calgary Max Bell Centre is a prominent City of Calgary Recreation ice hockey venue with seating for over 2,000 spectators in the main bowl and 400 in the expansion, where a second sheet of ice was added in 2007. This popular facility is also home to the Junior A Canucks and boasts health and fitness services, Lifemark Physiotherapy, concessions, meeting rooms, a press box with broadcast accommodation, and an elevated running track. It’s also home to yearly special events like Chasing Summer and the Mac’s AAA Tournament.
S2 was engaged in 2019 to provide conceptual design and costing for numerous facilities upgrades of the Max Bell Centre. The project was completed in the spring of 2022 and included a renovation and upgrade to the building and site:
- Replacement of the ice plant equipment for both arenas
- Replacement of the rink slab and refrigeration for arena 1
- Redesign of the main lobby to enhance the guest experience
- Redesign of the hockey change rooms to provide dedicated and accessible washrooms and showers and overall enhanced security
- Replacement of the running track
- New secure stair to the press box and new scoreboards and netting
- New fitness area with custom mill work and suspended monitors
- New child friendly amenity space with seating and interactive floor projector
- Accessible improvements to spectator seating
- Extensive renovation of the main public washrooms to meet current Code requirements and accessibility standards
- Lighting upgrades in the arenas and various locations throughout the building
- Renovations to the concession areas
- Renovations to the kitchen area
- Redesign of the meeting rooms with the addition of Welcome screens, interior glazing, accessible entry vestibules and millwork, integrated audio-visual equipment and finish upgrades
- Staff room renovation including new accessible millwork, new lockers and finishes
- Landscaping and parking lot upgrades to support outdoor events
- Upgrade and replacement of HVAC equipment serving the arenas, meeting, and change rooms
S2 worked with our consultants and the client to provide a comprehensive design and construction package within the approved budget that could be implemented during the planned shutdown in 2021.
