After more than four decades of shaping spaces, fostering relationships and inspiring those around him, Principal David Symons will retire in July 2026.

Dave’s journey began in 1981 when, fresh from earning his master’s in architecture from the University of Manitoba, he joined Dale Chandler Kennedy as what he jokingly calls an “office boy”—picking up models, making prints, and learning the profession from the ground up. It was humble work, but Dave approached it with the same dedication and enthusiasm that would become his trademark.

After more than a decade working for others, Dave felt ready to chart his own course. In 1994, he took a leap of faith, partnering with his longtime friend, classmate, and university roommate Robert Spaetgens, along with Bill Evans, to form Spaetgens Symons Evans Architects. Those early days were defined by hustle—networking, cold-calling, and working tirelessly to build something from the ground up.

Looking back, there wasn’t a single defining project or moment that marked a turning point for Dave. Instead, it was the growing trust placed in the firm, reflected in the types of projects they were asked to lead. What started as small retail renovations and pad buildings evolved into larger, more complex projects like shopping centres. Each new opportunity was a vote of confidence—proof that Dave and his partners were delivering exceptional work and building lasting relationships.

Known for his natural design sensibility and approachable demeanor, Dave has been instrumental in the growth and development of S2 Architecture. Throughout the firm’s evolution—from creating an Interior Design group in 2001 and rebranding as S2 Architecture in 2004 to establishing an Edmonton studio in 2012 and a Vancouver studio in 2018—Dave’s steady leadership has helped guide the firm through significant growth.

Dave has always believed in three core principles: value people, value the work, and do the best job possible. While projects and people have changed over the years, his approach to work and how others should be treated has remained constant. From day one, his goal was to create an environment where people enjoyed working together, where clients felt respected and cared for, and where quality work spoke for itself.

While Dave’s retirement marks the end of a remarkable chapter, he remains characteristically humble and forward-thinking. Rather than dwelling on past achievements, he’s optimistic about what’s ahead—both for himself and for the team he’s helped build. He’s confident that the firm will continue to thrive with fresh perspectives and new energy from the talented people he’s had the privilege of working with.

Dave’s influence will live on through the people he’s mentored, the studios he’s helped establish, and the projects that continue to shape communities across Western Canada and beyond. He will be remembered for his calm demeanor, approachability, sense of humour, and his passion for design.

His message to the firm is one of gratitude and hope: “S2 exists because of the team we have cultivated over the years. The way we collaborate, communicate and support each other is what got us here. So, thank you, everyone.”

We’ll miss your steadfast presence, Dave, and wish you all the best in your upcoming retirement. Thank you!
