For Alex Graham, architecture has always been about balance — creativity grounded in practicality, and long-term vision shaped through everyday experience.
Over nearly 15 years at S2, Alex has helped shape projects and communities that continue to evolve over time, bringing thoughtful perspective, technical understanding, and a collaborative mindset to every stage of the process.

Who or what inspired your passion to work in architecture?
My interest in pursuing a career in architecture began during high school, where I took drafting courses that quickly became some of my favourite classes. At the time, all work was completed by hand, prior to the use of computer programs in post-secondary education. I was drawn to the creative aspects of the discipline, including artistic inspiration, as well as the practical application of building science and mathematics that accompany architectural design.
What brings you joy outside of the office?
Outside of the office, I still spend a fair amount of time on the computer—though more often for video games than work. When I’m not playing video games, I enjoy walking my dog, relaxing/working in my backyard, and tackling the occasional home renovation project. I’m also a dedicated hockey fan (go, Flames, go) and the game is usually on whenever it’s playing. I’m also a dedicated football fan (go 49ers). I’ve already travelled to watch two games this year! Lastly, I can’t leave out that fitness has always been an important part of my routine, from gym workouts to group classes, and that over the past few years I’ve developed a particular passion for spin. That interest has grown to the point where I became a spin instructor this year at MODE fitness studio.
What has been your favourite or most rewarding project you’ve worked on at S2 so far? Why? What lessons did you learn along the way?
Having worked at S2 for nearly 15 years, it’s difficult to single out one most rewarding project. That said, working on the West District Master Plan—and several projects within it—has been particularly meaningful. Being able to see an entire community grow from its earliest stages has been incredibly rewarding. The district’s mix of amenities, commercial, office, and retail spaces, combined with a strong sense of walkability and shared green spaces, makes it especially compelling. Working on this master plan and its associated projects has also played a significant role in my professional growth within the firm’s residential practice.
As for lessons learned, the value of a long-term vision, and exposure to such a mix of disciplines, helped shaped where I am today within my career.
Nurture Your World: Share one small change you’ve made to live more sustainably and help maintain an eco-friendly balance.
I would have to say one small change I’ve made is spending more time gardening at home—from growing and maintaining plants that help support local pollinators to growing some of my own food.
What do you love most about being on the S2 team?
It’s simple. The team. If you don’t like the people you work with, why work there?
