Setting a New Standard for Sustainable Civic Design
S2 Architecture is proud to share that Windermere Fire Station No. 31 has been recognized with a 2026 Governor General’s Medal in Architecture, one of Canada’s most prestigious honours for architectural excellence. Awarded by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, the recognition celebrates projects that demonstrate exceptional design quality and meaningful contribution to the built environment.
Located in southwest Edmonton’s Windermere community, Fire Station No. 31 serves a rapidly growing neighbourhood while establishing a strong civic presence within the prairie landscape. Designed as a net-zero energy civic building, the station integrates emergency response infrastructure with a forward-looking approach to environmental performance, supporting both efficient response times and the City of Edmonton’s broader sustainability ambitions.
A thoughtful and comprehensive design process produced a building that balances the technical demands of a working fire station with the character of a public landmark. The single-storey, three-bay facility references familiar fire hall forms, including pitched roofs, tower-like elements, durable masonry, and large apparatus doors, while reinterpreting them through contemporary material expression and performance-driven design.
The station’s distinctive roof form is central to its identity. Strategically placed photovoltaic panels are optimized for solar energy generation, allowing the building’s environmental strategy to shape its architectural expression. Additional sustainability measures, including geothermal heating and cooling, bioswale-based stormwater management, and a high-performance building envelope, support the project’s net-zero operation.
Brick cladding provides the building with a sense of permanence, craft, and civic character. Shifting from regular to woven patterns, the masonry animates the façades in prairie light and reinforces the station’s role as both essential infrastructure and a recognizable neighbourhood landmark. The RAIC jury noted the project’s integration of formal, material, and sustainability strategies, recognizing how the solar array, roof geometry, and brick expression work together to create a clear architectural identity.
Inside, the building is organized to support the daily needs of firefighters while prioritizing response efficiency. Clear separation between apparatus bays and living quarters allows the station to function with precision, while glazing, daylight, ventilation, and courtyard connections contribute to wellbeing in a workplace that also serves as a second home for crews.
S2 Architecture served as Prime Consultant, providing Architecture and Interior Design services for the City of Edmonton, with gh3* as Lead Design Architect. The project reflects the power of collaborative design in delivering critical infrastructure that is operationally resilient, environmentally responsible, and deeply connected to community.
Windermere Fire Station No. 31 has also been recognized with several previous honours, including a 2018 Canadian Architect Award of Excellence, 2024 Canadian Green Building Award, 2024 Alberta Masonry Design Awards Presidential Award – Award of Excellence, 2024 Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize – Outstanding Projects, and a 2025 International Architecture Award Honourable Mention for Industrial Category.
This latest national recognition reinforces the project’s significance as a model for the next generation of emergency response facilities: buildings that serve, protect, and perform while contributing lasting architectural value to the communities around them.
