The Windermere Fire Station 31 project, for which S2 Architecture served as Prime Consultant, has received a Green Building Award from Sustainable Architecture & Building Magazine. This award celebrates excellence in architectural design and innovation, and we are thrilled to have played a key role in creating this landmark structure.
The jury praised the project for its simple and elegant design, noting that it represents a “radical and refreshing departure from traditional architectural responses” to fire station typology. The building’s distinctive curved roof, equipped with photovoltaic panels, sets a new standard for environmentally conscious public infrastructure.
Windermere Fire Station 31 was designed to support the City of Edmonton’s ambitious sustainability goals, specifically by generating on-site renewable energy to meet 100% of the building’s total energy needs. S2 Architecture, in collaboration with gh3* as the Design Architect and other project partners, employed a variety of innovative strategies to achieve this objective, such as:
- Optimal southern orientation for improved natural light and increased efficiency of photovoltaic panels.
- Geothermal systems for heating and cooling
- High-performance windows and insulation
- Quick-closing apparatus bay doors to reduce heat loss
The success of this project highlights the collaborative spirit and shared vision of the entire team. We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this project and look forward to continuing to create sustainable and innovative architectural solutions for our communities.
