We are thrilled to announce that S2’s Maplewood Fire & Rescue Centre has been honored with the Award of Excellence by the District of North Vancouver’s Advisory Design Panel’s Design Excellence Awards. This recognition celebrates not only architectural innovation but also the project’s vital role in strengthening emergency response for the North Vancouver community.

The new Maplewood Fire Headquarters, Training, and Operations Facility brings together essential services—including the Emergency Operations Center, Dispatch, Fire and Water Rescue, and training—under one roof. Designed as a post-disaster hub, the facility is fortified with backup systems and emergency protocols, exceeding Federal and BC standards for seismic safety, energy efficiency, and greenhouse gas performance. Constructed with heavy timber and locally sourced stone, it embraces LEED®, passive house, and passive solar principles, and is designated as a Net Zero Carbon building.

Inside, the facility features four double bays, a Fire Hall, administrative offices, and an internal Fire Training Center. The 1.6-acre outdoor training yard is equipped with specialized structures for comprehensive emergency training, including a training tower, fire behavior and auto extrication props, a collapsed trench, drafting pit, and high-angle training resources. This award-winning project sets a new benchmark for resilient, sustainable, and efficient emergency service infrastructure in North Vancouver.

Congratulations to the entire project team and the North Vancouver community on the award!
